Google Ads in Montreal means running one account in two languages. Ahrefs data for Canadian searches shows "dentiste montreal" and "dentist montreal" each getting about 1,100 searches a month, while "plombier montreal" (1,000) gets more than twice the searches of "plumber montreal" (450), and "chiropractor montreal" (1,300) gets more than four times the searches of "chiropraticien montreal" (300). An English-only campaign misses a large share of the city, and so does a French-only one.
Language is also a legal question in Quebec. Under the Charter of the French Language, public signs and commercial advertising must generally be in French, and a business with an address in Quebec that offers products or services to Quebecers needs a French version of its website, as Éducaloi explains. We manage Google Ads for businesses across Canada, and we build Montreal accounts with French and English campaigns from the start. Here is what that looks like in practice.
The average for both "plombier montreal" and "plumber montreal", compared with $9.00 for "plumber calgary" and $7.00 for "plumber vancouver".
Trades searches lean French: "electricien montreal" gets about 600 searches a month and "electrician montreal" about 300.
Health searches lean English: "chiropractor montreal" gets about 1,300 searches a month and "chiropraticien montreal" about 300.
Since September 2026, Google matches Search ads to the language of the search and the user, so each language needs its own ads.
The split between French and English searches changes from one service to the next. Here is how monthly searches compare for common Montreal services, based on Ahrefs data for Canadian searches:

Trades lean French: plumbers, electricians, roofers and accountants all see more French searches. Health and immigration services lean English. Dentists and moving companies sit close to even. A Montreal account that copies one budget split across every service will overspend in one language and miss demand in the other.
This matters more since September 2026, when Google began removing the campaign-level language setting for Search campaigns. Google Ads now uses the language of the search term and the user's language settings and preferences to decide which language a person knows, and tries to show an ad in a language they understand, according to Google's language targeting documentation. So we write separate French and English ads for every service rather than relying on a setting, and each ad points to a landing page in the same language.
Click prices in Montreal are also lower than in Calgary or Vancouver for many services. Our Google Ads pricing guide explains how ad spend and management fees fit together, and our post on setting a Google Ads budget walks through the math for a new account.
French first. Public signs and commercial advertising must generally be in French. English or another language can be used alongside French as long as the French is markedly predominant, and your website needs a French version (Éducaloi). For Google Ads, that means a French campaign for every service, French landing pages, and English ads that send people to pages that also exist in French. We are a marketing agency, not a law firm, so for unusual cases we recommend checking with the Office québécois de la langue française or your lawyer.
Privacy and tracking. Quebec's private sector privacy law requires a business that collects personal information using technology able to identify, locate or profile a person to tell them about that technology and how to activate those functions (section 8.1), and privacy settings must provide the highest level of confidentiality by default (section 9.1), according to the Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector. Remarketing and some conversion tracking can fall under these rules, so we set up a consent banner and Google's consent mode before tracking goes live.
Regulated professions. Lawyers answer to the Barreau du Québec and dentists to the Ordre des dentistes du Québec, and both set their own advertising rules. We write ads to the rules that apply in Quebec and flag anything that needs your approval before it runs.
Every service gets French and English ad groups with their own keywords, ads and landing pages, so each language can be measured and budgeted on its own.
Downtown, the Plateau and the West Island behave differently from Laval or the South Shore. We set location targets and bids around the areas you actually serve.
Conversion tracking, call tracking and remarketing go live with a consent banner and Google's consent mode, using local 514 and 438 tracking numbers for calls.
You see calls, forms and bookings by campaign and by language each month, so you know whether French or English searchers bring cheaper customers.

We run campaigns for businesses across Montreal, Laval and the South Shore, including:
Yes. Montreal accounts get French and English ad groups for each service, with ads and landing pages written in each language rather than translated word for word. Each language is tracked separately, so you can see which one brings cheaper leads for your business.
Quebec's Charter of the French Language generally requires commercial advertising to be in French, with other languages allowed alongside it, and requires a French version of the website for businesses with a Quebec address. In practice, we run French campaigns for every service and treat English campaigns as an addition. For specific cases, check with the OQLF or your lawyer.
Many Montreal service keywords cost less per click than the same searches in Calgary or Vancouver. "Plumber montreal" and "plombier montreal" both average about $2.50 USD per click in Ahrefs data, compared with $9.00 in Calgary. Your ad budget is paid to Google, and our management fee is separate. Our Google Ads pricing guide breaks down both.
Yes. We target the boroughs and suburbs you actually serve, from the West Island to Laval, Longueuil and the rest of the South Shore, and set bids by area so your budget goes where your best customers are.
Our bilingual writers create both versions from scratch for each service, and we test ad variations in each language separately. If one language underperforms, we adjust its ads, keywords or landing page on their own instead of changing the whole account.
